Before you choose
- Sexual concerns can be influenced by hormones, medications, circulation, stress, relationships and other health factors.
- A treatment option should be considered in the context of the concern you want to address and your broader health history.
- Prescription options require licensed clinical evaluation before they are selected.
- Bring a current medication list and questions about expected use, safety, interactions and alternatives.
Treatment Details
Tadalafil is a prescription medication used to help manage erectile dysfunction and, for some people, urinary symptoms from an enlarged prostate. It does not create sexual desire, and sexual stimulation is still needed for an erectile response.
Tadalafil helps blood vessels relax so more blood can flow into the penis during sexual stimulation. That can make it easier to achieve and maintain an erection. Your provider can help decide whether this treatment approach fits your needs.
Tadalafil is taken by mouth. The prescribing clinician selects the treatment plan based on health history, other medications, and any kidney or liver concerns. Use only the individual instructions supplied by your care team.
Some people notice improved erectile function, while others may need to discuss different options with their provider. Tadalafil does not increase sexual desire or guarantee an erection. Possible side effects include headache, flushing, indigestion, nasal congestion, and back or muscle discomfort.
Never combine tadalafil with nitrates, recreational nitrites (poppers), or riociguat, because blood pressure can fall dangerously. Tell your provider about heart conditions, blood-pressure treatments, alpha-blockers, alcohol use and other medications. Seek urgent medical attention for an erection lasting more than four hours or sudden vision or hearing changes. Do not combine erectile-dysfunction treatments without clinician direction.
